Here's a list I like to read, for good info on good Antivirus Software. When I help people who run Windows, Clean up their infected Systems. My favorite, was Avast for Windows. Until the last few years. When the dropped some features, in the Free Version. But, it's Rates #1 on moist sites. I tried out Comodo, back when the Firewall came with it for Free. It was good, but took a little getting use to the interface. But, not it seems to have more Features in the Free Version, than most of the others, in the list. Comodo, does still have a free Firewall. You just have to download and install it Separately. Here's the Page with the download link. It's in the middle of all of the other Apps...

Introduction

Antivirus software provides an essential layer of protection from viruses, trojans, worms, spyware, adware, dialers, keyloggers, and rootkits. Don't let the name antivirus confuse you. These days every good antivirus has good detection rates for all forms of malware, not just viruses. The term malware includes viruses, trojans, worms, spyware, adware, dialers, keyloggers, rootkits, and any other software which performs malicious activities on a computer.

Sadly, the amount of malware currently in circulation is so large that no antivirus could possibly detect all of it. Despite vendor's claims, no single antivirus solution can detect nearly all new malware. There are some products out there, including some in this review, which include technologies which are able to adequately protect a computer, but any product which relies mainly on detection is statistically doomed to fail at some time. Also, using more than one real-time antivirus at the same time uses much more system resources, can cause system errors, and can even reduce protection. For my advice on how to compensate for these weakness of antivirus products, to a large extent, please see my other article about How to Stay Safe While Online. Having a good antivirus product does go a large way towards adequately protecting your computer, but in this day I would highly recommend that you add additional layers to your security.

Below I have reviewed some of the most effective Free Antivirus products currently on the market. In order to make this review more unbiased, although of course my own intuition and experience does affect my judgment as well, I came up with a particular methodology for comparing these products. This methodology is described in the following section.

Methodology For Comparing Products

Skipping on down...

Discussion And Comparison

Comodo Antivirus is my top pick for advanced users or for Intermediate users who are okay with an antivirus software which will occasionally ask them for input. However, if you do not fall into those categories, or for any other reason find it to not be a good fit for you, then you will likely find my next pick suitable. Also, for those who prefer a complete solution, there is always Comodo Internet Security, which is also free and includes a firewall in addition to all other components which already come with Comodo Antivirus.

The reason I made this my top pick for advanced users or users who are okay with a somewhat talkative antivirus software, is because it is the only product which I feel confident saying that it will protect you against nearly 100% of real-world threats. I have a lot of experience with this product. I am a volunteer moderator on the Comodo forums and have been using it for a long time. I know this product very well, and am entirely confident in its ability to protect.

Comodo Antivirus uses the cloud to facilitate the detection of the most recent malware, as do many other Free Antiviruses reviewed in this article. However, Comodo also incorporates a Behavioral Blocker, which will automatically sandbox all software which it does not know for sure is safe. Thus, the user is protected from nearly all malware, which will either be detected by the antivirus component or sandboxed by the Behavioral Blocker. It will also analyze unknown applications for suspicious behavior, and alert the user accordingly.

However, as mentioned previously, users who do not want a somewhat talkative antivirus should continue to my next pick. Also, by default Comodo Antivirus has small advertisements (which can be disabled as shown here). Also, during installation users should be sure to click the Customize Installer option, which is near the bottom-left of the installation window. This will allow them to uncheck additional software, which the installer will automatically install with Comodo Antivirus unless unchecked. This software is not dangerous and includes a browser, and ad-blocking addon, and an optional paid service which would allow Comodo technicians to assist you with any computer problems you have. These, and a later option to change your homepage to support Comodo, can safely be unchecked during installation. Even with this extra hassle, this software is still my top pick, but I do wish they made the process simpler.

Avast! Free Antivirus is has very good protection rates. Avast has many different protection shields, boot-time scanning, a behavioral blocker, an internet site ratings plugin, script malware protection, and access to cloud-based protection. It's arguable whether their ratings plugin offers comparable levels to WOT, but the script malware protection can prevent certain browser exploits, a feature not available in any of the other free AV's reviewed.

Avast is also relatively light on resources. However, do note that Avast requires a free registration to function after 30 days, and the default installation installs the Chrome browser unless you uncheck it.

Panda Cloud Antivirus is another excellent choice for average users, who may find both Comodo Antivirus and Avast too confusing. It has a simple interface, completely automated features, access to cloud-based protection, and has been shown to be very good at protecting a computer. Panda Cloud Antivirus has a behavioral blocker, web protection, and access to cloud-based protection, all of which will help increase your security.

Greetings!

The great news is that on the 1st of April (no joke!) the SourceForge platform graduated at the Apache Software Foundation, and it's now called Apache Allura(TM)! We are very excited about this news and we look forward to engaging more with all developers and end-users who are interested in using, testing, and improving our beloved forge!

Since the last newsletter, we've gone to ApacheCon to have fun and discuss possibilities with other Apache committers, and as this message goes out, we'll still be at PyCon meeting other Pythonistas and running our sprint!

This month, we'll also be honoring two projects: Free Pascalas our Community Choice chosen by a public vote, and Apache OpenOffice Extensions as our Staff Pick.

April Projects of the Month - Community Choice and Staff Pick

The Community Choice April Project of the Month is Free Pascal, an advanced open source compiler for Pascal and Object Pascal. Read our interview with the project's founder. Congratulations to the Free Pascal project on being voted as the April 2014 Community Choice POTM.

The Staff Pick Project of the Month is the Apache OpenOffice Extensions project. SourceForge has re-engineered the Apache OpenOffice Extensions site to make it a better home for OpenOffice extensions. If you want to know more about the new features we have made available read them at our blog.

Major Site News

Our site developers continue to work tirelessly to offer up new features on the site. Here's a quick summary of one of the new changes this month.

We've expanded the "include" wiki macro to import content from a Source Code Repository. This means you can keep your documentation in your repository and it'll automatically update in the wiki. See more in our blog.

Past, Present and Future Conferences

Back in March, we attended the ninth Open Source Think Tank, where we sponsored the Community Leadership Summit. The Apache Allura project had two presentations at ApacheCon, but if you missed them, you might want to have a look at Dave Brondsema's presentation "Manage and develop your projects with Allura, the OSS forge" (PDF).

SourceForge and Allura will also be at PyCon in Montreal, April 11-16.  We'll have a booth and would love to talk with anyone in attendance. You'll learn more about the Allura sprint over there and in the next newsletter.

luckyBackup - backup and sync utility for Linux and Windows

I've been using luckyBackup for years and love it! I found it in my Fedora Linux Repository's, several years ago. I'm building a Windows 7 System for someone today and looked at the Web Site, to see if there is a Windows Version. I thought I had seen one, in the past... There is a Windows Version. But, it is in early development, right now (04-15-14). There are detailed instructions on how to install luckyBackup, in Windows here... http://www.bmtsolutions.us/wiki/doku.php?id=contrib:luckybackup-win. It will take a bit of time and I will have to follow the instructions. So, I will get back to it, later. When I have time. I hope they are able to keep on working on luckyBackup. I have tried several other Linux and Windows Backup Apps and it is my Favorite...

I tried the Unchecky App, out in Win7. It helps you... Not install additional Unwanted Programs or "Bundleware". When installing "Freeware" and "Share Ware" in Windows OS's. Check it out...

Don

Tired of unchecking unrelated offers while installing software?

Have you ever felt, while installing software, that the installer tries to push additional unwanted programs at all cost? Ever missed a checkbox, and spent hours afterwards removing adware? Ever opened your browser after an installation, only to find out that you have a new homepage, a new search engine, or even a new browser?
Unchecky aims to keep potentially unwanted programs out of your computer.

How to set up a primary DNS server using CentOS - Linux FAQ

Here's a good Series on How to set up a primary DNS server using CentOS and How to set up a secondary DNS server in CentOS. These articles, show you, step by step. How to set your server up for this. From Xmodulo Linux FAQs, tips and tutorials. Read More below...

How to set up a primary DNS server using CentOS

Any operational domain has at least two DNS servers, one being called a primary name server (ns1), and the other a secondary name server (ns2). These servers are typically operated for DNS failover: If one server goes down, the other server becomes an active DNS server. More sophisticated failover mechanisms involving load balancers, firewalls and clusters are also possible.

All DNS entries for a particular domain are added in the primary name server. The secondary server will simply sync all the information from the primary name server based on counter type parameter set on the primary server.

This tutorial will describe how to create a primary DNS server running on CentOS. Please note that the DNS server presented in this tutorial will be public DNS, meaning that the server will respond to queries from any IP address. Limiting access to the server will be discussed in future tutorials.

Before we start, I would like to mention that DNS can be set up with or without chroot jail environment. The chroot jail environment confines the DNS server to a certain directory in the system, as opposed to allow the server system-wide access. That way, any vulnerability of the DNS server would not compromise the entire system. Chrooting a DNS server is also useful for a test deployment.

Objective

We will be setting up a DNS server in a test environment for the domain example.tst, which is a hypothetical (non-existing) domain. That way, we will not accidentally interfere with any other live domain.

In this domain, there are the following three servers.

ServerIP addressHosted servicesFQDN
Server A172.16.1.1Mailmail.example.tst
Server B172.16.1.2Web, FTPwww.example.tst
ftp.example.tst
Server C172.16.1.3Primary DNS serverns1.example.tst

We will be setting up a primary DNS server, and add necessary domain and DNS records as shown in the table.

How to set up a secondary DNS server in CentOS

In the previous tutorial, we created a primary DNS server (ns1) for a test domain example.tst. In this tutorial, we will create a secondary DNS server (ns2) for the same domain by using bind package on CentOS.

When it comes to setting up a secondary DNS server, the following factors should be kept in mind.

  • You do NOT need to manually create forward and reverse zone files in the secondary DNS server. The zone files will be periodically synced from the primary DNS server automatically.
  • Whenever any zone file is modified in the primary DNS server, the parameter 'serial' should be updated. The secondary DNS server will initiate synchronization (zone transfer) only if serial at the primary server has been changed.

We assume that the IP address of the secondary DNS server to be set up is 172.16.1.4. Let us start installing.

GenStrip Blood Glucose Test Strips by Shasta Technologies: FDA Safety Communication - May Report False Results

[Posted 04/29/2014]

AUDIENCE: Pharmacy, Risk Manager, Patient

ISSUE: The FDA is advising people with diabetes and health care professionals to stop using GenStrip Blood Glucose Test Strips because the strips may report incorrect blood glucose levels.

During a recent inspection of Shasta Technologies LLC, the FDA found extensive violations of federal regulations intended to assure the quality of products in the manufacturing of GenStrip Test Strips. FDA found that Shasta Technologies did not have in place many of the requirements of a quality system. Without assurance of an adequate quality system, the FDA believes that the strips could report incorrect blood glucose levels.

BACKGROUND: GenStrip Blood Glucose Test Strips, sold by Shasta Technologies LLC, are "third-party" blood glucose monitoring test strips. Shasta’s GenStrips are advertised for use with the LifeScan OneTouch family of glucose meters (e.g. Ultra, Ultra 2 and Ultra Mini).

RECOMMENDATION: Discontinue use of GenStrip Blood Glucose Test Strips. FDA recommends the use of alternative glucose test strips that are designed for use with the LifeScan OneTouch family of glucose meters.

Here's some info on an interesting Open Source Virtualization System, called Docker...

Don

About Docker, Inc.

Docker, Inc. (formerly known as dotCloud) is the company behind the open-source Docker project and the growing Docker ecosystem of people, products, platforms, and partners revolutionizing the way code is built, packaged, and deployed.

Our Mission

Docker aims to enable a new age of agile and creative development, by building "the button" that enables any code to instantly and consistently run on any server, anywhere.

Docker is an open source engine that enables any application to be deployed as a lightweight, portable, self-sufficient container that will run virtually anywhere. By delivering on the twin promises "Build Once…Run Anywhere” and “Configure Once…Run Anything," Docker has seen explosive growth, and its impact is being seen across devops, PaaS, scale-out, hybrid cloud and other environments that need a lightweight alternative to traditional virtualization. (Click here to read more about Docker.)

The people of Docker, Inc. are the original authors and the primary contributors to and maintainers of the Docker project. We also run the platforms and systems that make the Docker project run, including the Docker public Index and provide materials and support to the rapidly expanding Docker community.

Docker Re-Imagines Server Virtualization [VIDEO]

By Sean Michael Kerner (Send Email)
Posted May 8, 2014

Server virtualization for the last decade has been dominated by the concept of virtual machine hypervisors of the type used by VMware ESX and others. There is another form of virtualization known as container-based virtualization that is now rising in popularity, thanks in no small part to the open-source Docker project and its commercial backer, Docker Inc.

Docker is now at the release candidate stage for its 1.0 release, which will mark a significant milestone. In a video interview, Docker CEO Ben Golub details why the Docker model makes sense for server virtualization and how the open-source project and his company will move forward with the 1.0 release.

How to run Docker containers on CentOS or Fedora

Lately Docker has emerged as a key technology for deploying applications in the cloud environment. Compared to traditional hardware virtualization, Docker-based container sandbox provides a number of advantages for application deployment environment, such as lightweight isolation, deployment portability, ease of maintenance, etc. Now Red Hat is steering community efforts in streamlining the management and deployment of Docker containers.

Not only for the cloud environment, Docker can also be quite useful for end users, especially when you want to test out particular software under a specific Linux environment. You can easily spin up a Docker container for the target environment, install and test the software in it, and then throw away the container once you are done. The whole process from beginning to end is quite efficient, and you can avoid messing up your end system all along.

In this tutorial, I am going to describe how to create and manage Docker containers on CentOS or Fedora. Note that Docker is supported only on 64-bit host systems at this time.

Metamorhose - A cross platform file and folder mass renamer allows many different renaming operations in a GUI

Here's a new file Renamer, for Linux, Windows and Mac. I am trying it out in Fedora 19 and 20 Linux. I'm planning on renaming the whole content of an old Windows Installation. So, that I can Copy all of the Pictures and Media Files to a new Backup Partition. Without, having any Name Clashes. So, I'm adding the last changed date and removing all odd characters (!@#$%^&*()){}[]|\/) too. It automatically renames any Sub Folders in the Directories I chose. So, I didn't need to set any Folder Renaming options, for my purposes. Note, this could Break a Running System. So, be careful with your Folders! So far, I really like it. It is still in Beta. But, other than a little problem with Picture Image file Previews not working, right off... I get this Error, on Start-up of the App. "Python Imaging Library (PIL) not found.Refer to readme file for install instructions. You will not be able to preview images." I did my installation from the Fedora Repos, with Yum Extender. So, I also installed the two packages, that mentioned Python Imaging Library (PIL). That didn't fix the Error. But, I don't care about previewing image thumbnails, anyway. I imaging, that would just slow down the app. It preforms very well, in the tests I did. Renaming both image files and folders. The first thing, I noticed. Was that every time you added another "Operation". I had to wait for the Preview to Process all of the Files. Then, I noticed, that there is a little check box, at the right side of the Preview Window. There, you can turn of the Preview Feature. Then, you can just hit the Preview Button, on the left side of the Window. When you are done adding Operations. That sped up my work, quite a bit. I just got in there and played around with all of the functions, until I got what I wanted. The interface is both Powerful and Intuitive. So, if you like Kursader's Rename App KRename. Or Bulk Rename for Thunar File manager. But, need more features. Check out Metamorhose...

High Heat Circuits - PCB Design for High-Temperature Applications

As is well known, designers are squeezing ever more performance out of printed circuit boards. Power densities are on the rise, and with them, high temperatures that can wreak havoc on conductors and dielectrics. Elevated temperatures - whether from I2R losses or environmental factors - affect thermal and electrical impedances, causing erratic system performance, if not outright failure.  Differences in thermal expansion rates – a measure of the tendency of a material to expand when heated and shrink when cooled – between conductors and dielectrics generate mechanical stresses that cause cracking and connection failures, especially if the boards are subject to cyclic heating and cooling. If the temperature is high enough, the dielectric can lose its structural integrity altogether, knocking over the first domino in a cascade of trouble.

Of course, heat-generation has always been a factor in PCB performance, and designers are accustomed to including heat sinks into their PCBs, but the demands of today’s high power-density designs frequently overwhelm traditional PCB heat-management practices.

Mitigating the effects of high temperatures have far-reaching implications, not just for the performance and reliability of PCBs, but also for such factors as:

  • Component (or system) weight
  • Application size
  • Cost
  • Power requirements

Introduction

From Earth Day (April 22nd) to June 20th, we are in the midst of an Indiegogo crowdsourcing campaign to raise the funding needed to gear up for production of our Solar Road Panels.

Our technology works. Now it's time to gear up for manufacturing.

To visit our Indiegogo page and/or to donate, simply click on the Indigogo banner above.

Solar FREAKIN' Roadways

Years ago, when the phrase "Global Warming" began gaining popularity, we started batting around the idea of replacing asphalt and concrete surfaces with solar panels that could be driven upon. We thought of the "black box" on airplanes: We didn't know what material that black box was made of, but it seemed to be able to protect sensitive electronics from the worst of airline crashes.

Suppose we made a section of road out of this material and housed solar cells to collect energy, which could pay for the cost of the panel, thereby creating a road that would pay for itself over time. What if we added LEDs to "paint" the road lines from beneath, lighting up the road for safer night time driving? What if we added a heating element in the surface (like the defrosting wire in the rear window of our cars) to prevent snow/ice accumulation in northern climates? The ideas and possibilities just continued to roll in and the Solar Roadway project was born.

Frequently Asked Questions

We're in the process of updating this page daily with more current information. Please come back often.

Index

  1. What are you going to do about traction? What's going to happen to the surface of the Solar Roadways when it rains
  2. How much weight can these panels support? Semi-trucks get pretty heavy!
  3. Why don't you start with something easier like sidewalks, driveways or parking lots before installing roads?
  4. How can a Solar Roadway pay for itself? How can it generate revenue?
  5. Would you have to rip up perfectly good roads and parking lots to install your system?
  6. If a parking lot is full of cars or a highway has lots of traffic, how are they going to produce any energy?
  7. These panels must be valuable. What's to keep people from stealing them for home use?
  8. How much will your panels cost?
  9. Won't the LEDs cause light pollution?
  10. In the winter, will the solar cells be able to power the heating elements in the panels?
  11. You say that these roads will charge electric vehicles and will "pave the way" for EVs to be a viable option. But how much more electricity would we consume if every vehicle being driven in the US were an EV? And would the solar roadway grid be able to keep up with that much demand?
  12. What kinds of things have you tested for during your contract with the Federal Highway Administration?
  13. What can Solar Roadways do to help Electric Vehicles?
  14. Wouldn't it make more sense to just build canopies over the roads to hold the solar panels? That way, we wouldn't have to be able to drive on them?
  15. How much power does your parking lot generate?
  16. How will you keep the panels clean and how much power do you lose when they are dirty?
  17. This is such a great idea. Don't you hear from investors who express interest in investing in your project? Why are you asking for help on Indiegogo?
  18. What are all of the different applications for your panels?
  19. How do you store the excess energy?
  20. Why don't you just do projects where it doesn't snow and you won't have to worry about how much energy the heaters use?
  21. How will you replace damaged panels in a highway?
  22. Don't solar cells produce DC energy? How does a home or business use this?
  23. I understand your system is a decentralized power grid. Why is that important?
  24. Can Solar Roadways help driverless vehicles like the Google car?
  25. How can this technology be used to make crosswalks safer?
  26. Are you using rare earth metals in your Solar Road Panels? Will there be enough? Will it be toxic?
  27. How are you going to handle skid marks from tires? Won't that block your sunlight?
  28. Have you thought about adding piezoelectric elements to your panels?
  29. What about motorcycles and bicycles? Won't they slip on the glass surface? What about strollers, skates, skateboards, wheelchairs, etc.?
  30. How are you going to distribute the power? Won't you have to have cables along every road?
  31. What is the maximum heat that the panels can endure?
  32. Can your Solar Roadways handle Army tanks?
  33. Will the LEDs even show up in direct sunlight?
  34. Wouldn't animals be all over the road during winter? Won't the warmth of the road be attractive to them?
  35. How long will these Solar Road Panels last?
  36. Who owns the electricity that your new infrastructure produces?
  37. What will an earthquake do to a Solar Roadway?
  38. What happens if lightning hits a Solar Roadway? Won't that fry the electronics?

A new open-hardware computing platform, flexible and powerful, designed for use as a desktop, laptop, or standalone board.

Novena is a 1.2GHz, Freescale quad-core ARM architecture computer closely coupled with a Xilinx FPGA. It's designed for users who care about open source, and/or want to modify and extend their hardware: all the documentation for the PCBs is open and free to download, the entire OS is buildable from source, and it comes with a variety of features that facilitate rapid prototyping.

Premiums & Pledge Levels

We are offering four variations, and at the conclusion of the Crowd Supply campaign on May 18, all the prices listed below will go up by 10%:
Just the board ($500)
For crafty people who want to build their case and define their own style, we'll deliver to you the main PCBA, stuffed with 4GiB of RAM, 4GiB microSD card, and an Ath9k-based PCIe wifi card. Boots to a Debian desktop over HDMI. Ships six months after campaign conclusion.
All-in-One Desktop ($1,195)
Plug in your favorite keyboard and mouse, and you're ready to go; perfect for labs and workbenches. You get the circuit board above, inside a hacker-friendly case with a Full HD (1920x1080) IPS LCD, plus an extra aluminum bezel to hack on. Ships seven months after campaign conclusion.
Laptop ($1,995)
For hackers on the go, we'll send you the same case, board, and LCD as above, but with battery controller board, 240 GiB SSD, and a user-installed battery. As everyone has their own keyboard preference, no keyboard is included. Ships eight months after campaign conclusion.
Heirloom Laptop ($5,000)
A show stopper of beauty; a sure conversation piece. This will be the same board, battery, and SSD as above, but in a gorgeous, hand-crafted wood and aluminum case made by Kurt Mottweiler in Portland, Oregon. Ships nine months after campaign conclusion.

All configurations will come with Debian (GNU/Linux) pre-installed, but of course you can build and install whatever distro you prefer!
This is not a machine for the faint of heart. It's an open source project, which means part of the joy – and frustration – of the device is that it is continuously improving. This will be perhaps the only laptop that ships with a screwdriver; you'll be required to install the battery yourself, screw on the LCD bezel of your choice, and you'll get the speakers as a kit, so you don't have to use our speaker box design – if you have access to a 3D printer, you can make and fine tune your own speaker box.

Linux From Scratch - Shows you How to Build a Linux System from the the Kernel Up

Ever thought about building your own Linux Distro, from the Kernel Up?. Check out this site...

Don

From the LFS Project Homepage

What is Linux From Scratch?

Linux From Scratch (LFS) is a project that provides you with step-by-step instructions for building your own customized Linux system entirely from source.

Why would I want an LFS system?

Many wonder why they should go through the hassle of building a Linux system from scratch when they could just download an existing Linux distribution. However, there are several benefits of building LFS. Consider the following:

LFS teaches people how a Linux system works internally
Building LFS teaches you about all that makes Linux tick, how things work together and depend on each other. And most importantly, how to customize it to your own tastes and needs.

Building LFS produces a very compact Linux system
When you install a regular distribution, you often end up installing a lot of programs that you would probably never use. They're just sitting there taking up (precious) disk space. It's not hard to get an LFS system installed under 100 MB. Does that still sound like a lot? A few of us have been working on creating a very small embedded LFS system. We installed a system that was just enough to run the Apache web server; total disk space usage was approximately 8 MB. With further stripping, that can be brought down to 5 MB or less. Try that with a regular distribution.

LFS is extremely flexible
Building LFS could be compared to a finished house. LFS will give you the skeleton of a house, but it's up to you to install plumbing, electrical outlets, kitchen, bath, wallpaper, etc. You have the ability to turn it into whatever type of system you need it to be, customized completely for you.

LFS offers you added security
You will compile the entire system from source, thus allowing you to audit everything, if you wish to do so, and apply all the security patches you want or need to apply. You don't have to wait for someone else to provide a new binary package that (hopefully) fixes a security hole. Often, you never truly know whether a security hole is fixed or not unless you do it yourself.

What can I do with my LFS system?

A by-the-book LFS system is fairly minimal, but is designed to provide a strong base on which you can add any packages you want. See the BLFS project for a selection of commonly used packages.

Who's who:

  • Project Leader: Gerard Beekmans
  • Project Co-leader: Matthew Burgess
  • Project Co-leader: Bruce Dubbs
  • Plus numerous people who contribute to the book and its side projects.

Kali Linux ISO of Doom

In our last blog post, we provided an example of running an unattended network installation of Kali Linux. Our scenario covered the installation of a custom Kali configuration which contained select tools required for a remote vulnerability assessment using OpenVAS and the Metasploit Framework.

With just a few minor changes to this concept, we can further leverage Kali to create other cool and shiny toys as well. In today’s post, we’ll see what it takes to create what we fondly refer to as “The Kali Linux ISO of Doom”.

The idea we had was tbao build an “unattended self-deploying” instance of Kali Linux that would install itself on a target machine along with a customized configuration requiring no user input whatsoever. On reboot after the installation completes, Kali would automagically connect back to the attacker using a reverse OpenVPN connection. The VPN setup would then allow the attacker to bridge the remote and local networks as well as have access to a full suite of penetration testing tools on the target network.

The Heartbleed Bug is a serious vulnerability in the popular OpenSSL cryptographic software library which is used for applications such as web, email, instant messaging (IM) and some virtual private networks (VPNs)

The Heartbleed Bug

The Heartbleed Bug is a serious vulnerability in the popular OpenSSL cryptographic software library. This weakness allows stealing the information protected, under normal conditions, by the SSL/TLS encryption used to secure the Internet. SSL/TLS provides communication security and privacy over the Internet for applications such as web, email, instant messaging (IM) and some virtual private networks (VPNs).
The Heartbleed bug allows anyone on the Internet to read the memory of the systems protected by the vulnerable versions of the OpenSSL software. This compromises the secret keys used to identify the service providers and to encrypt the traffic, the names and passwords of the users and the actual content. This allows attackers to eavesdrop on communications, steal data directly from the services and users and to impersonate services and users.

I've known about Synergy, for quite a few years now. But, I have a USB KVM Switch. That I use for my Multi-PC Setups. So, I haven't really needed a Software Solution for this, in the past. But, My KVM, only has 4 Ports and I do find my self. Wishing that I had more, quite often, these days. I ran across an article about Synergy, today. And now it supports Windows, Linux (my Favorite OS) and Mac. And it's in my Fedora Repos too. So, I'm taking another look. Check out what Synergy can do now...
